The Story of Dr. Clarence Gonstead, D.C.

Dr. Clarence Gonstead stands as a transformative figure who reshaped the landscape of chiropractic care, leaving an indelible mark on its history. Nestled in small-town Wisconsin, he established a chiropractic Mecca, and his legacy endures as the Gonstead System continues to exemplify the pinnacle of chiropractic excellence.

Born on July 23, 1898, in Willow Lake, South Dakota, Gonstead's early years saw a family move to a dairy farm in Primrose, Wisconsin. At 19, he faced a crippling bout of rheumatoid arthritis, confining him to bed.

His life took a remarkable turn when his aunt sought the assistance of chiropractor Dr. J.B. Olson. Following a series of adjustments, Gonstead experienced a miraculous recovery, igniting his passion for chiropractic care.

This pivotal moment spurred Gonstead to enroll in Palmer College of Chiropractic, where he graduated in 1923. Simultaneously, his background as an automotive engineer significantly influenced his approach, challenging prevailing notions about subluxation mechanisms. Disputing B.J. Palmer's theory, Gonstead introduced the revolutionary Level Disc Theory, positing that subluxation originated at the disc, triggering an inflammatory response leading to neurological complications.

Gonstead's innovative system involved pioneering inventions such as the Nervoscope, enabling precise detection of neurological components in a subluxation through temperature differences. Additionally, he designed the cervical chair and knee-chest table, optimizing the correction process by centering vertebrae on the disc using gravity and spinal mechanics.

Internationally acclaimed, Gonstead's determination and craft refinement led to the establishment of his clinic in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, complete with an airstrip and hotel for patients worldwide. Known for his relentless work ethic, he adjusted patients tirelessly, even during the polio epidemic, where he remarkably lost no patients to the disease.

Beyond revolutionizing subluxation understanding, Gonstead emphasized the complexity of subluxation as a multifaceted entity. His chiropractic system analyzed patients comprehensively, employing multiple diagnostic criteria and correlating findings for the most accurate diagnosis.

“Remember Chiropractic always works. You may question your application, but never question the principle,”
